Flappy Bully:
True Bull Terrier Characteristics

Meet the star of Flappy Bully!

Our flyer isn't just a cartoon flapping past chimneys. He's drawn as a proper Bull Terrier, and here's everything that makes his breed so special.

1Character

Douglas looks like a little powerhouse, and he is: strong and agile. But underneath all that muscle he's a big softie. Bull Terriers are known for being peaceful, easy-going and sweet-natured, with a cheeky jaunty swagger in everything they do.

He's clever too. That bright, determined look on his face says "I've got a plan", and he's happy to learn when you show him the way.

2A quick history

His great-great-(lots of greats)-grandparents came from England, where bulldog-type and terrier-type dogs were crossed to make the first "bull-and-terriers". In the 1850s a dog breeder called James Hinks shaped them into the breed we know today.

The very first Bull Terriers were all white; coloured coats were welcomed later. Their rough early days are a long-gone past. Today's Bull Terriers are much-loved family companions, a lot like our flyer!

3Movement

Watch a Bull Terrier trot and you'll see a smooth, free and easy stride that covers lots of ground. The front legs reach out well, the legs move nice and straight, the head stays high and the back stays level.

Best of all is that famous jaunty bounce, showing off all that agility and power. Our flyer just takes it one step further… and flies!

4Head & face

  • The famous egg-shaped head: long, strong and smoothly filled in, with no dips or hollows.
  • From the side it curves gently down to the nose, a bit like a Roman nose.
  • Small, dark, triangular eyes set high and close, with a twinkly glint.
  • A black nose that tips downward at the end.
  • Small, thin ears that stand up straight.

5Body

  • Muscular and solidly built, but nicely balanced.
  • A broad, deep chest and well-rounded ribs.
  • A short, level back.
  • A short tail, set low, thick at the base and tapering to a fine point.
  • Round, compact feet. No height or weight rules: just lots of solid dog for his size!

6Coat & colours

A Bull Terrier's coat is short, flat and glossy, and a bit coarse to touch, with snug-fitting skin. The breed comes in two varieties:
